Night Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) – Full-Time
Hours: 39 hours per week
Shift Pattern: Wednesday to Friday (12-hour shifts) plus 1 in 4 Saturday nights (12 hours)
Salary: £29,250 per annum (basic) + £9,360 night premium (total £38,610 per annum)
Additional Saturday night premium: approximately £780 per annum (as worked)
Requirements:
Minimum 1 year qualified (preferred)
Experience in anaesthesia and patient care essential
Role Overview
The role of the Night RVN is critical to maintaining high standards of patient and client care, ensuring the highest levels of welfare for hospitalised and emergency patients. As a key member of the nursing team, you will work closely with the Out of Hours (OOH) team to provide dedicated overnight nursing support.
You will be responsible for the care and treatment of hospitalised patients, assisting with emergency procedures, and supporting the Out of Hours service.
Main Responsibilities
Provide high-quality nursing care to hospitalised patients, including monitoring critical care cases
Assist veterinary surgeons with in-patient care, emergency cases, and clinical procedures
Monitor anaesthesia and support surgical and emergency interventions
Ensure smooth and effective patient handovers between shifts
Develop, implement, and regularly reassess nursing care plans
Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including treatments, diagnostics, and client communications
Dispense and administer medications under veterinary direction, ensuring compliance with all protocols
Assist with diagnostic procedures (e.g. radiography, blood sampling)
Communicate effectively with clients, including providing updates, triaging emergencies, and arranging appointments
Maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and equipment care throughout the practice
Prepare and maintain surgical and clinical equipment
Support stock control and ensure appropriate stock rotation
Participate in rota cover for sickness and annual leave as required
Carry out general administrative duties (e.g. filing, scanning)
Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain a positive team environment
Undertake continuing professional development (CPD) and share knowledge with the team
Key Responsibilities
Deliver all aspects of general nursing care in line with professional standards and practice policies
Administer treatments including medications, fluid therapy, dressings, and euthanasia as directed
Escalate any concerns and ensure veterinary review of unstable patients
Maintain health and safety standards and report any concerns appropriately
Professional Guidelines
Always work within your level of competence and seek veterinary support when needed
Exercise caution and professionalism, particularly in the presence of clients
Do not provide or imply diagnoses
Refer any client queries beyond your authority to a veterinary surgeon
Provide appropriate advice on general care topics such as nutrition, dental health, parasite control, grooming, vaccination, and routine procedures (excluding diagnosis)
